South Africa is
experiencing a boom in tourists from the United Kingdom thanks
to the favourable exchange rate and World Cup fever. The UK
Pound has plummeted against other international currencies
encouraging UK holidaymakers to choose South Africa as their
holiday destination for 2009.
At one stage in 2009 UK holidaymakers
to the Eurozone - which includes some of the UK’s most
popular destinations - were receiving only one Euro for every
Pound they exchanged, compared to the previous exchange rate
of around 1.5 Euros to the Pound.
While the Pound’s exchange
rate with the South African Rand is at it most favourable for
years, peaking at around 16 Rand to Pound compared to an average
exchange rate of 10-12 Rand to the Pound in previous years.
The squeeze on UK holidaymakers’ spending
money has seen them look further afield with the UK’s
largest tour operator Thomson reporting a rise in long haul
bookings, including to South Africa.
Leading UK online retailer lastminute.com
has also reported an increase in interest and bookings to South
Africa this year, while the country’s leading currency
exchange companies are also seeing a massive increase in business
for the Rand.
